Post why antenatal classes #1

In our modern world and for the modern woman, pregnancy doesn’t slip into our lives conveniently and subtly. In fact, it can ruin our carefully organised and controlled worlds – unless we make adjustments and intentionally plan for a healthy pregnancy and a fantastic future with our children.

One of the best ways to prepare for the many unknowns ahead of you once you are expecting a baby, is to sign up for an antenatal class. Even if you are a doctor, nurse or midwife professionally, when YOU are the mother or father expecting the baby, you need time and space to prepare mentally, emotionally, spritually and physically. Possibly the greatest surprise benefit couples experience from an antenatal course that they didn’t necessarily expect, is that it gives them dedicated bonding time as a couple to chat and plan and discuss their expectations of how life will change with an extra family member around. NOW what if you could enjoy the benefits of such a course but all from your laptop, iPad or even smartphone??!!

Just Engage offers an online antenatal class with a team of lecturers, personal mentorship and networking opportunities, notes to download or print, quizzes, forums, a blog and online shop and so much more.

Our lesson and video course content can only be accessed by members on the course. Prospective members register on the website with a username and password – this allows them to return to the site multiple times whenever convenient for them to access the content or use other features on the website. The content is also continually evolving as new specialists are included and new videos are added. The entire online class costs $75 payable by Paypal or credit card and this entitles the user to 6 mini-courses focusing on a different theme each course.

Here is the course outline as it stands:

Course 1 – Health in Pregnancy

Course 2 – Natural Labour

Course 3 – Postnatal Care and Breastfeeding

Course 4 – Inductions, Elective and Emergency Caesarians

Course 5 – Parenting

Course 6 – Life After the Birth

We approached various specialists to lecture on their topic of interest so as to create a broad base of knowledge and perspective. You can read their individual bios here on our Meet the Team page and find out which lessons they are responsible for.

What is the benefit of doing the class online?

The greatest advantage, of course, is TIME. It is designed with the working mom or the wife of a working, travelling spouse in mind. The aim is to make antenatal education and preparation accessible and even enjoyable! The class fits in to your schedule rather than you trying to attend a class at a set time each week. There is about 90 minutes of video footage to get through on each mini-course as opposed to 3-4 hours per week with a traditional class so it is much more time efficient. The lectures are deliberately kept to a basic 20 minute average length so they are succinct and to the point! We have, however, added related resources with blogposts, websites, apps and other interesting articles so you can read into a specific topic further should you wish to.

Isn’t online education very lonely? How do I meet other people having babies at similar times to me?

Just Engage gives you the best of both worlds: you can process the information on your own and in your own way, but you have access to an entire online community who would be keen to discuss topics and share resources with you.

Visit our forum page here where expecting or new parents can start new topics of conversation or respond to an existing one. For the members of our courses, after any lesson, you can contact Sharon who facilitates the course or leave a comment on the page which she or other members can respond to. Members are known to each other only by their username but they can share as much or as little personal information as they feel comfortable with.

We also emphasise social networking and support. Members are encouraged to follow Just Engage on FacebookTwitter, pinterest or Google+ for updates, giveaway details, latest blogposts and birth news from members.

Many people, especially men, find traditional antenatal classes awkward and avoid them as much as possible! Others leave antenatal prep until the last few weeks before the birth and then realise they are running out of time. Now it can actually be a bonding time for you as a couple in the comfort of your home, helping you to deepen your relationship and strengthen your team dynamic as you prepare for a major life adjustment.  We aim to cover topics related to far more than just pregnancy and labour. Newborn Care and Life after the birth are major themes in the later courses and these topics hopefully inspire great conversations and “strategic planning” for an expecting couple!

Post Why ANC #3

The increasingly popular blog is updated almost weekly with a new post. These are either my personal parenting stories as I raise my 4 boys or they might be my opinion on different services or products relevant to expecting and new parents.

Our latest feature of our updated website is the online shop where you can purchase the products we can recommend ie. books authored or compiled by the lecturers or products and services we wish we had known about before we had our children. For now we are concentrating on simple practical items and we will expand our range as we discover products worth selling.

If you’re pregnant or a new mom, visit our site and let us know your thoughts. Better yet, share our website details, our intro video above or this blogpost with friends or family around the world who are having their babies in the near future. Sign up for our e-mail newsletters in the right sidebar or follow this blog through bloglovin or NetworkedBlogs.

Alternatively, e-mail Sharon for more information.
